I think I just scared one of my local friends, one I didn't even know had totally opposite alternative energy views. And her family's in the oil business, which I didn't know, until now. I went into a long rant about the need for alternative energy, not wanting a job with a crappy commute, not with the cost of gas approaching $5.00/gallon.
She asked, "Which do you want more, a decent job or a decent commute?" See, I'm at a crossroads as I have some clients, but not quite enough to be a freelancer and that's the crux of it. In the old days I was mostly tecommuting and it was great, gas was cheap, or cheaper. A commute and gas didn't matter that much. Being out on the open road, driving was fun, part of the California experience. Now it's not fun. It's cost prohibitive. I look for local things to do for fun and don't drive much, not like the old days.
It's why I'm into the CNG car, but that's not a total answer. The MPG needs to increase on the Honda Civic. Plus, there needs to be more CNG stations. At least in San Diego County there are about ten stations.
