Thank you for your recent email regarding the use of compressed natural
gas (CNG) as a transportation fuel. As your State Representative, I
appreciate learning of your support on this important issue.
With gas prices and the cost of electricity rising, Florida is making
some important decisions about its energy future. That is why we are
considering all transportation fuel options available, including CNG.
There are currently 15 CNG stations in Florida that primarily serve
local government and private business fleets. I am aware of Governor
Crist's initiative to determine the viability of CNG for mass
distribution in Florida. In addition, the Florida Energy Office is
working with the state's Clean Cities Coalitions to promote alternative
fuels such as CNG and advanced vehicles, fuel blends, fuel economy,
hybrid vehicles and idle reduction.
Florida has taken a major step forward in controlling its energy future
this year by working to develop a balanced, cost-effective approach to
make Florida a leader in creating an innovative energy policy.
Increasing the production and use of alternative energy sources will
benefit our state now and will bring great rewards for Floridians in the
future.
The importance of helping make our country energy independent cannot be
overstated. Energy is an issue that affects our economy, our national
security, and our environment. With our continued dependence on foreign
sources of oil for transportation fuels, our country sends hundreds
billions of dollars in oil profits overseas every day to countries that
are hostile to our nation. Technologies such as CNG can help us reduce
that dependence and help our nation regain the energy security that is
vitally important for our future.
I am excited and optimistic about the future of CNG playing a major role
in Florida's energy independence. Should legislation regarding CNG or
Florida's energy future come before me, I will be certain to keep your
views in mind.
Again, thank you for your letter. Please do not hesitate to contact me
in the future on this or any other matter.
Ellyn Setnor Bogdanoff
State Representative - District 91

The Honorable Ellyn Setnor Bogdanoff
Florida House of Representatives
402 South Monroe Street
Tallahassee, FL 32399-1300
Dear Representative Bogdanoff:
I am writing to ask that you consider the benefits of using compressed
natural gas (CNG) as a transportation fuel when formulating our energy
policy. As you may know, CNG currently sells on average $2 less than a
gallon of gasoline and has the ability to reduce vehicle emissions by up
to 90% and greenhouse gases up to 30%.
Natural gas CAN serve as a bridge fuel for our transportation needs and,
as one of your constituents, I am deeply concerned about our rising fuel
costs and our dependence on foreign countries for our energy needs.
Using
natural gas for transportation would greatly reduce our national
security
risk as 98% of the natural gas we consume is produced in North America.
Moreover, those natural gas supplies are only continuing to increase,
particularly due in recent years to growth in unconventional gas plays.
The most critical piece of getting more CNG vehicles on the road is to
ensure there are refueling stations conveniently located across our
country. Please consider initiatives and legislation to help businesses
expand existing fueling stations and build new stations that provide
CNG.
America already has hundreds of thousands of miles of natural gas
pipelines that can be tapped for a fueling infrastructure.
By working with American automakers, we can also provide models of CNG
vehicles to be used throughout our country. Many American automakers
produce various CNG vehicles overseas and can easily manufacture them in
America.
We have the opportunity to play a vital role in making America more
energy
independent and hope you will take time to consider a fuel source that
is
clean, abundant, affordable and American.
Sincerely,
Tamara
