When I first joined the Pickens Army I didn't agree fully with Mr. Pickens that the best temporary solution for our automobile fuel problems would be the use of CNG or compressed natural gas. I originally believed that we could best use Ethanol for the short run until other reusable fuels became available. I thought that because ethanol was a liquid and wouldn't require changing the fuel pumps at gas stations and that all the infrastructure was already in place to use it. Also the fact that conversion to E85 Ethanol was probably the cheapest of all the conversions available for the individual driver, generally costing about $500 (ref www.changetoE85.com). However the problem with ethanol is that we can't make enough of it at a price that would be comparable to gasoline and it costs too much to produce.
CNG on the other hand is nearly usable right out of the ground or nearly so. From what I understand, natural gas is composed mostly of methane and needs little or no refining to use. The cost will be higher for the conversion, but there is an abundant supply of natural gas and its possible to convert gasoline vehicles to both gasoline/CNG. The conversion costs more but would definitely get us off of our dependance on foreign oil. Best estimates also believe we have more than 40 years of natural gas that we know of right now. Who knows what additional exploration might find.
I have viewed 3 excellent videos on "youtube" about natural gas. For your convenience I have included those videos on this page. Check'em out and see what you think.
