It seems building Nuclear Plants could only benefit a small number of people in relation to solar power grants. Nuclear has a faster payback than solar, but who benefits from us buying nuclear?? I don't see new companies starting up to build nuclear plants. Aren't we in a recession? Is our energy need not a good source of economic growth?

It is tough for me to say this as I apply to jobs at nuclear power plants. My mind is set on working in the energy sector.

The question is should american's be able to supply their own energy?

The Hyperion Power Module is a commercial Nuclear Power Plant, it costs a mere $1 million. Its enough power to feed a large community grid. Click to see my photo.

A much easier way is called GeoThermal Power generation.
The original idea requires drilling into the earth to reach a point of temperature difference of say 300 degrees C.
I'm thinking how to conserve energy by not drilling but by obtaining drilled samples to then make a cubic of which the process of heat from the naturally placed central core would heat the granite rock and cycle the heat to a heat exchanger then it cools and returns to the cubic. The heat exchanger would feed the heated solution to the boiler where the steam then turns a turbine and the solution again cycles through a cooler and returns to the heat exchanger to reheat again. The off pressure from the boiler then is sent to a cooler and is returned into the heat exchanger solution so it will start heating again. The end result form the turbine is electricity from the generator and that is enough to power a large city. Just think Kalina Cycle = Heat Recovery.

The difference in a nuclear power plant and this geothermal concept is that the geothermal concept is not as dangerous as the nuclear power plant. A small meltdown could be the end of power service to a large city. The geothermal plant is self contained and has a operational control mechanism to start and stop the radioactive decay of radioactive elements, Uranium (U), Thorium (Th) and Potassium (K). The Granite mass is exposed to the circulation waters but since Granite does not absorb the fluid it is more efficient.

See picture, 50 MW Geothermal Power Plant Schematic Diagram [ 1 ] [ 2 ], in My Photos.

American's will supply their own energy, I just hope they don't mess anything up in doing that much and stay within the EPA guidelines so they don't go to prison if they cannot pay the EPA fines. You know a University in Illinois had a Coal fired Plant permit for High-Sulfur based Coal in Illinois.

Abbott Power Plant at the Illinois University at Urbana-Champaign

The EPA cited them with numerous violations and their excuse was that the documents did not have listed on them the things the EPA was inspecting so they did not know to check those things. This is a University which almost lost all electricity, heating and cooling from three of its twelve power switchers (Outgoing Power Fuse Boxes) when they caught fire and exploded but the fire department quickly accessed the damages and a team got the boilers back up and generating power by the end of the afternoon. The main cause was never defined but my guess is that is was a couple of want-a-bee Radical Terrorists and somehow they got access and forgot to turn off the Outgoing Power before pulling the fuses for a shutdown and that is when the ARC occurred between the fuses and the box when they slowly pulled the fuses out. Wonder if it was William Ayers. maybe he has some burn scars on his body from being inside that power room when it happened to Arc, has anyone ever looked him over real good, I mean his naked body to see if it has burn scars. This incident happened prior to 9-11 in January 1991. Most all Power Units located in Illinois are Natural Gas anyway, shutting off Coal as a resource would not be so bad if they replaced the Coal fired plants with Natural Gas, Propane then they are feasible; while others are Fuel Cell: Oil, Distillate Fuel Oil, Jet Fuel, Kerosene, RFO, Biomass, LFG, Digester Gas, Bagasse / Microturbine: Waste, MSW, Black Liquor, Blast Furnace Gas, Petroleum Coke, Process Gas / Reciprocating Engine: Wood, Wood Waste. A Total of 142 Power Facilities.
