PickensPlan

As I write this the it is inevitable that the financial bail out bill will soon be pass. The Senate has prettied up the thing and now it sits in the house. They will dump some more makeup on it and, though he will probably complain about the "Pork" contained to to pacify the masses, the President will sign it. Then you and I to the tune of hundreds of billions will be stuck with the bailout.

Sad thing is that for anyone one who in any way is a scholar of history knows that we have tried this before and it got us no where. In fact this appears to be a repeating cycle of greed and collapse. You can never rebuild a massive economic failure like this one by dumping cash into the the gaping, insatiable maws of the financial sector who's admitted only purpose is to maximize profits at all cost.

For these reasons, we need to redouble our efforts. We must push for the adoption of the Pickens Plan. After the economic dust settles, we have to really hammer our congress people to get on board. Right now is not the time, they are all wired on the adrenalin of real and perceived threats to the global economy. They are dealing with potential hazards to us, their careers and the flow of money into their campaign coffers. I am sorry, I know that there is a bit of cynicism in this, but It angers me when what the founding fathers intended as a deliberate process is forces into a reactionary stance. The only times for Congress to be reactionary is when we are directly attacked by a foreign power. Everything else should be deliberate. that is why the Legislative branch is divided like it is.

Now we in the Pickens Army know that we are under attack but through the subversion of cheap oil. Cheap energy, but this does not really constitute a attack. It is rather a quiet feeding of our basic needs. Economic growth and stability through cheap labor. Remember everyone, we have only the power of the sun each day, each year. This is all of the energy we can rely on. Using Oil and Coal cheat this fundamental fact of life. By using stored energy, millions of years of stored sunlight, we cheat the basic thermodynamic reality of living on a planet.

This is why Pickens is such a genius in his choice to tie the future to one of the naturally occurring energy sources. For the long term is exactly what we need. We need to tie our cart on to things that will run out but to the natural cycle of the earth and sun.

Looking to the manufacturing of new wind and solar generation is what we must push our representatives to do. Once this ill conceived bill passes and the checks start rolling out to buy up the bad debt that those geniuses in wall street and the mortgage houses have profited off of; once the flow of credit starts back up again, we must tell the Congress that we insist on green jobs. We must insist that they pass laws that encourage retooling our failing manufacturing base. Their are many factories out there that can be made to build our energy future.

So what can we do? Help find more members. If you are a networker, step up your efforts. Network and bring more to the table. If you are a nag, like me, nag. Call Congress. Insist they support bills like the New Apollo Energy Act. Tell them to start their own gang of 10, 20, 30, team up regionally to look at the resources they can bring to bear to address the local needs and the local resources for new jobs, new energy. Only through jobs are we really going to fix the economic problems and there is not a 1 fits all solution out there. We have to look at where we are and take advantage of it.

Mr. Pickens is from the wind capital of the world. Therefore it is natural for him to focus on wind as the resource for harvesting. It makes perfect sense. For the southwest, sun it the thing to harvest. Up here in the Northwest we can tap into hydro, geothermal and wave energy. Wave and wind in the Northeast. We have so many natural forms of energy and and just as many ways to exploit it. If we make our congress men and women listen to us we can push this as a big part of economic recovery.

Bailing out the top is not the solution. It is but a band aid, a temporary solution that will buy is 6 months or a year if we are lucky. That is all it has done in the past. The real solution exists with the lower and middle class. We are the engine that makes the economy grow, makes it humm. We must get the national and state legislation to help us. This will entail bringing business to bear to our future as well. We have others but the government must pave the way with incentives and legislation that will make this the best path for us to follow.

Take time, converse with your friends and your Pickens social network. Look at the region you are in and the natural resource that can be used to harvest energy from and think about how best to unite with others. Maybe the way we need to do this is just that, organize via the resource and push all of the people in power to create regional power districts. Maybe this is not the right way, I don't know. All I do know is we must force the issue. We must get a energy policy that keeps us moving in the direction of energy independence. Call your state and local reps tell them to get on board. Explain that this is a way to wash down the bitter pill they just swallowed. That addressing the man on the street, they can in our eyes redeem themselves for putting us so far into debt. For putting the children of today, and their children into debt.

Wind energy credit is good. Any alternative energy credit, tax breaks, directional policy is good. However, in the context of this misguided bailout, it is pork. Plain and simple a bribe to every member of congress to get them to pony up to the table. This is Washington at its worst. These other issues that got piled into this bill should have stood on their own and the fact that WE could not force the issue on energy credits speaks badly of our effectiveness.
Personally I wanted to know who would have voted against the energy bills. that way we could have held their feet to the fire. we could have moved them out of congress and get pro Pickens people in place. Now we have to wait another election cycle before we can do anything about these people.
We now have to wait until we can start building a case against them so we can act against them.

Here's what the American Wind Energy Association had to say about the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act:

“We salute Members of Congress in both parties who fought under difficult conditions to keep the renewable energy production tax credit and small turbine investment tax credit on the agenda until the very end, and then pushed them across the finish line. These tax credits are essential to the continued growth of wind energy, to the economic and energy security of the United States, and to a successful beginning in the fight against global warming. We look forward to working next year with a new Congress and Administration to fashion a serious long-term clean energy policy that increases domestic energy, increases our reliance on clean renewable energy, and creates jobs for Americans.”

OK, so the bailout bill is unpopular - that's understandable. But let's take this nugget of good news where we can get it. BTW, Wind producer Vestas' stock jump over 9.5% on the news friday, in spite of an otherwise horrible market.

Dan all i can ask is do not vote for anyone that is part of this crock.last Sunday i emailed my senator explaining how much this locks like socialism to me ie when the bank is owned by to gov . my senator sent me a reply...
This is the most serious and critical domestic issue I have dealt with in my 14 years in Congress. We have been betrayed by many people and by abuse of the system. Now we have two significant choices to make - do nothing or take action.

I strongly believe that doing nothing will destroy the financial security of millions of Americans and possibly lead us into a depression. I just as strongly believe the bill as now negotiated will arrest the crisis and begin to turn our economy around.

The bill that I voted for is not a bailout. H.R. 1424, "The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act," is crafted to address the crisis; restore security for the American taxpayer; and return our nation to the strongest economic power in the world. And in the process this bill enables us to root out and punish those who cheated us all.

I know that my vote in favor of this package was not the politically popular thing to do, but this is not a popularity contest. This is about the future of our country and the future that my children and grandchildren will inherit. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind or my heart that my vote in support of this measure was the right thing for our economy, for Georgians, and for our country.
wow from tight right wing to socialist in 5 min. i hope he gets reelected next month coz he lost my vote

JT,
yes but it is not a good thing. Just because they piggybacked some good on essentially a bad bill can't make it good. I know that they should have done this, the refunding, on its own and that this was the only way to get it through but this type of politics really is a very bad thing in general. But I suspect I am telling you something that you already feel.

Dan, you DO know that (re) funding alternative energy sources was piggybacked on the Bailout, right?
