Research that won't pan out? That is the exact opposite of everything that I say. The technology has always been here. There is just not enough small companies investing in the technology. Instead of people investing in things that could really help our economy, we just invest in housing.

I agree that we should drill on the east coast, and hope the nipple is offshore Jacksonville. But drilling should cost the government nothing.

Mobil created a process in the 70s to convert methanol to gasoline. Methanol can be made through gasification. Gasification uses trash and wood waste not corn. Please leave corn out of this discussion. The ACS symposium has many great articles that should be used. The problem with research is that nothing ever comes of it. People don't industrialize the ideas. I have been researching many of these so called useless research projects and find that today they are very profitable. Back in 1970 when $1.00 gas was believable the $1.50 technologies were not worth the risk of the price of fuel dropping. Today we know the price will not drop to $1.00/gallon so there is no reason to scrap these projects.

Ethanol can be made for $1.00/gallon in todays gallons and dollars. Even though it is not as efficient as gasoline in your gasoline engine it still provides a local alternative to our oil problem. Gasoline is 1.4x better than ethanol on a per gallon basis. So lets see here, provided shipping, taxes and profits will make it $1.65 then we multiple is by 1.4 since we need 1.4 gallons per gallon of gasoline this gives us $2.31. So if you buy ethanol for $1.65 it is a gasoline equivalent price of $2.31... Which last time I check is less than $3.25

We do not have enough biomass to make all of our energy; but we could make a large amount, and if everything goes right the plants will start producing here in Florida.

I am not saying I am a proponent of 10% ethanol at every pump. I think the ethanol should be selling at the E85 pump for the flex fuel vehicles that are being sold here in an area where no E85 is available. The price of ethanol should drive the demand for ethanol, but incentives are needed to get people to invest initially.

Want to make some money? Invest in a fuel station and sell biofuels. Would you not want to provide your customers a superior product at a reduced price?

Have you guys ever heard of Dimethyl Ether(DME) being used to replace diesel? The key to the price of DME is the price of Methanol, which is made through gasification (The same way cheap ethanol is made). So this leads me to the nobel prize winner George Olah who proposed the "methanol economy" in an essay that later became a book.

We could severely curve our appetite for foreign oil by simply using trash and biomass to make our fuel. The leading source of biomass in the world is right here in the South East U.S. The Pine Tree is the solution to our problem.
