Creating Jobs in America --- Green or otherwise

I wrote this as an off-the-cuff response to someone's valid point that jobs are what we need to spur our economy, rather than tax breaks. That's true, of course. Tax breaks don't do us OR the government any good when there's no income to receive or tax. But the article didn't say how we'd create those jobs, so I've answered to that question:

STOP SENDING THE WORK OVERSEAS! STOP BUYING STUFF FROM OVERSEAS!

The only ones making money in that deal are the ships and their diesel suppliers. It shaves off a percentage, large or small, for the company selling the product. This translates to dime wise and dollar foolish on our part. You save a few bucks AT THE MOMENT by buying stuff made in China. But you pay for it several times over. You pay for it when the poorly made stuff falls apart more quickly and must be replaced. You pay for it when there are a dozen other people who want your job because they lost theirs to a manufacturing plant in China. You pay for it again when you go to the stores to buy most everything else, because the dollar is down and doesn't go as far as it should or used to. You pay for it at the pumps, because the considerable expense of hauling the stuff halfway around the world (and sometimes back, depending on where the materials come from) adds to the demand on crude oil. You pay for it over and over again. So next time you buy something made in China, ask yourself if the buck you save today is worth the $20 it's going to cost you in the coming week or two.

Let China sell their wares to their own people. It was fine when we were importing cultural stylings and knick-knacks but, given an inch, we've since given a mile, and then another.. and now their goods have displaced our own all across the country.

You want more jobs? Buy American. The job you save probably IS your own.
