Something significant has happened. Something that hasn't happened for a very long time. It appears that many, many Americans are actually sharing the same positive and important belief. That is: we need to change the way we produce and consume energy.
This is truly a rare opportunity for all of us to do something really big. I cannot remember the last time I felt the US population come together so strongly on a single issue. Democrat, Republican, Independent, it doesn't appear to matter. We can all see the wisdom in this collective change because its right for so many different reasons. Maybe you think this change is good for the environment or maybe you think we shouldn't be paying people who hate us to blow us up or maybe you think this will save you money. Regardless of the reason, millions of you can now buy into the fact that this is a great idea.
OK, single common belief sounds good but how does one leverage this belief into positive action? Well here is the thing and it is really easy. All that you and I need to do is change how we individually consume energy and mass change will occur naturally. Here is a simple example. Auto makers say that they would make more fuel efficient cars if Americans would buy them but they can't because we won't. The auto makers are right, we keep buying big, powerful, gas-swilling tanks. All we have to do is change what we buy and the auto makers will give us what we need. That's how business works. If we don't buy what's on offer than the shop keeper has to change what's in the store.
There is another important thing we need to do. We need to use mass communication to spread the word and to change behaviour across all the US population. We have done this before and with great effect. In the 60's we convince people to stop littering and in the 80's we persuaded people to stop smoking. We can do this again to motivate people to change how they use energy.
We can do this and I for one am going to do everything I can to make this happen. How about you?
Stay tuned for for more on this important topic. In the meantime please feel free to post your thoughts and ideas.
