Why do we need multiple approaches to get off foreign oil?

Do you know someone who is truly poor? Do you know anyone who has to choose between driving to work and eating lunch? Do you know anyone who has to choose between driving to work and paying a babysitter to watch the kids while at work? Those people are more likely to use inefficient kerosene or fuel oil to heat their homes. These same people can't afford to go out and get a new CNG car and drive it. They can't even afford the hybrid to save a little cash. The point is someone has to think of them and do something about the cost of gas and oil. Every year people try to make it through the winter with just blankets, sweaters and the heat required for cooking. Many live and die by the cost of petroleum-based energy right now. As foreign oil continues to get more expensive and we are years away from the day when The Plan helps us to get completely off foreign oil, what are these people supposed to do?
So, while the plan gets moving and those who can afford the new technologies are buying them, these people need some relief. One way to provide some relief is drill for American oil. I know it would be nice to get completely off oil, but that is not a reality for many Americans right now. So, unless you are willing to buy them the new cars and more efficient heaters that don’t use oil, you should consider a stop-gap measure to get them through the rough times. As the first generation of CNG, Hydrogen, and electric vehicles go on the used car market, they might be able to join the movement and buy one.

I agree 100%. I don't know how we are going to heat our home this winter. can't afford to buy a wood stove ,can't afford the $30,000.00 to go solar ,can't afford the $15,000.00 for a wind turbine , can't afford a new car. Yes we have to do something quickly, winter comes fast and hard here. I am worried.I'm disabled and my husband drives 50 miles round trip to a low paying job ,that he works 10- 12 hours a day at,so we are not slackers. we are trying to be productive, it just gets harder everyday.

I agree. All these plans are fantastic for those who can afford them, but there's an incredibly large percentage of americans who can not. I would love to, for example, power my home with solar panels. However, I don't have ten grand to drop for solar. I can't even afford the two grand it would cost to take out the oak tree in my front yard that is slowly but surely edging out my sewer pipeline! Yes, we need these alternatives, but we also need to find a way to make these alternatives affordable for the masses, or it's not going to make much of a difference.
