Partyline Vote for the Stimulus Package

In my opinion, President Obama extended an olive branch to Rebublicans this week, and so did the Democrats, by putting billions of dollars worth of tax cuts into the Stimulus Package. Never mind that most economist said tax cuts go into savings or paying off debt instead of into the economy. Yet, because of (pork? spending?) every single Republican in the House voted NO. Why? To prove a point on this first major vote of the Obama Administration - where he actually went to them and listened? Did that happen under the previous administration?

What does it mean? Do Republicans now want to stop all spending after RECORD spending under their leadership? They say it's going to cost too much - and it didn't then? They complain about pork - and thankfully after a lot of that came to light it was trimmed. And yet they voted against it. Well if you're going to have to do it on your own, then you might as well strip all of the goodies for Republicans and barrel the money into clean energy!

What does it mean for our own campaign. Imagine that as a best case scenario, the Pickens Plan generated 1.4 million calls/emails to the House this week (taking into account the many who didn't participate and the many others who went into overdrive). You can't say that no one called, because the lines were busy when I called! What does it mean that we weren't able to convince any Republicans to sign on?

I guess they are going for broke, because if Obama actually rights this Titanic, then more of them will be voted out in two years. Or maybe (assuming they cared) they want to save America from a bad economy, foreign oil and more, by sitting on their hands. What happened to the Republican members who pledged to support the Pickens Plan? Did Boone not say that we need this thing to pass because of the green spending in it? Hmmm. Maybe Republicans knew it would pass and decided to cover their butts by voting against... but that can't be since it would mean the same old dumb politics, right?

Whatever it was, I can't see much Bipartisanship in the foreseeable future. This means - as perhaps it always did, that We The People are going to have to fix this country without any real coorporation from Washington. You can bet that it will continue to be politics as usual - with Democrats being Democrats, Republicans being Republicans, and the rest of us outside of D.C. shaking our heads in disbelief.

Where am I wrong?

OK, the Senate votes on their version Next Week. What can the Pickens Plan do that's meaningful?

We can do it. Our friends across the water did!

I can't with a clear conscious ask my senators to vote for this travesty of a bill. Over 80 % is geared to pay off Democrat supporters and lobbyist. Baracko Bama said he would veto any bill that included pork/earmarks. He better get his veto pen ready and make the authors of this boondoggle famous. We the voting public don't have to accept something simply because it has a few thing in it that will work. The congressmen and senators are acting like crazy people by doing the same thing over and over no matter what the previous outcome was. Lets force them into producing a clean bill that out grandchildren won't have to pay for for the rest of their lives,

Good point, Clynton. I believe the internet is key in keeping our momentum. More people than ever are becoming aware of how the House and Senate are conducting business. Political commentary is all over the cable networks. I do hope you're right about the big guys. We all know how persuasive big money can be! Mike

Unfortunately, Mike, they've played us as they always do. Minutes after each election, they figure our threats to vote them out are meaningless for another 2 years. But, this time will be different. We also have the power of the dollar and the tools of the internet. The little guys who mostly funded Obama (whoever they are) can pool enough money to fund their opponent next time. We just need to keep track of who voted against us - and with this past vote it's relatively easy. In addition, the big guys who normally fund their campaigns are losing a lot of spending power these days - for various reasons, so these politicians will feel it in their wallets long before the next election.

I've always felt that We The People were going to stand up and solve this problem by ourselves anyway. We'll do it in spite of the politicians, not because of them. But being politicians, they will be quick to claim credit...

Unfortunately Clynton, it appears to be politics as usual. One would think that the condition this country is in would be a wake-up call to Washington. As this does not appear to be the case, we must take this task of energy independence into our own hands. Judging by the size of T. Boone's following, it can be done. We vote them in, we can vote them out! They must be made to understand that the old way of doing things is out. The biggest problem I think we face is the conditioning of the average American. We still seem to be under the impression that we can't change the status quo, that individual voices won't be heard. But there is power in numbers, and T. Boone is taking them in at a rapid rate. We must be pro-active! Glen Beck has a video recounting 40 some odd years of lip service from numerous presidents on the topic of foreign oil and energy independence. All that has to end NOW! And the only way it will happen is for all of us to speak up and be heard. I have been recruiting anyone and everyone to this cause. Does everyone listen? No, of course not. But those who do will add strength to the endeavor and that's what we need now more than ever. Mike Schwartz

Well the battle isn't over. We have more people in this than what it took to change other things at The White House. They will hear us if we keep pushing this plan. I know we have to beat the greed and corruption to win this battle and it can be done. We can vote against those who oppose us and it will not matter what side you are on. The White House and congress helped get us into this mess and we the people need to get us out. The plan has funding, infrastructure is practically in place, and it will create millions of jobs including converting existing vehicles to run on natural gas. Utah is already doing this so what the hell is the rest of the country waiting for? They pay less per gallon now than the rest of us pay for gasoline. We need this to happen for the sake of our nation. The sooner we get our leaders to hear us the sooner we get confidence back into the people of our country. This really is a fairly quick fix and I feel it is the most important part of the plan. The rest needs to be done as well. All new and existing homes and buildings need solar panels in addition to The Pickins Plan and that should do it for power. How many jobs is that?

Thanks for the comment Gary. I am a supporter of the Pickens Plan, just as I support the Constitution and the Country. I accept that all men (and women) are flawed in some way - myself included, so I don't support them per-se. I might support a policy here or there.

Like you, I support a Manhattan style project to end foreign oil and financial dependence - in fact I once asked Richard Branson to use his billions to fund such a project to end the use of fossil fuels. I don't expect it to come from Washington. Like the Stimulus Package, about all I expect is a somewhat flawed bill with goodies for everyone - and hopefully a huge amount of support for alternative energy. That being said, this bill is exactly what I expected - and clearly T. Boone felt the same way. I just didn't expect the Republicans to still snub their noses at it. The Democrats have enough votes to fund their own agenda, but they put in a lot of stuff that Republicans like to ask for. What a slap in the face.

We need to focus on this issue, I agree, but who's going to do it? The Pickens Plan is a good first step, but the original Manhattan project took infinite resources and unbelievable talent. Today, no one's seeking the unbelievable talent and absolutely no one is willing to fund it infinitely. I expect that day will come, however. Just like in WW-II it came once America realized that we were fighting for our very existence. [OK, maybe I've watched too many old war footage...] Not enough people realize it yet, but that day will come.

Sorry Crystal - you are right. I remain optimistic that we will eventually have the real motivation and then we will fix this problem once and for all.

Consider the Connection to:
A POSITIVE Attitude
It will take the White House and an act of Congress to move the country in a POSITIVE direction.

Clinton,
i gather you are a supporter of the President? i will mention a few reasons why i don't think the Picken's Plan was served well by whatever inclusions were made towards energy issues into this latest proposal. (Which did pass through the House with eleven Democrats voting against the measure). The prime reason is that i feel the issue of our independence from imported oil is of such consequence that it deserves the full attention of the Legislature and a "Manhatten Project" scale and urgency. If the Picken's Plan website can be believed, we sent 19 Billion dollars to oil exporting nations last month. Certainly the economy would improve if some of those dollars stayed here? So i ask you to FOCUS on the issue at hand, which is our independence from imported oil. That is the issue that is vital to our security and prosperity. Will matter little if democrats pass a stimulus package, if it is largely a fools errand.

I have nothing to offer at this time; but I do agree that Michael Kendall's earlier recommendation about offering "Energy Independence Saving Bonds", is a good thought and should be considered by all. I also enjoyed viewing the other tangeable comments at this site, thank you all for your thought provoking comments.Leland/L.V.,Nv.
