Up there in the first question on this page, Am I interested in being an organizer in my area? Kind of puzzles me. Organize what? Becoming ENERGY independent? Ok, I'm on board with that. I have been an advocate of this since the seventies when I experienced my first "gas shortage."
I live in San Diego County and here in Ca we are building some windmill farms, but not enough in my opinion. The entire Interstate 5 corridor from LA to Redding should be utilized for windmills. I like the vertical type, as it seems we could pack more per sq ft (assuming the power generation by the vertical column windmills are equivalent to the standard type).
Americans should also be focusing on large solar photovoltaic farms and solar generating steam systems to power turboelectric plants in the southwestern desert areas. We are seeing a few plants being constructed and I am encouraged. I hope we will eventually see hundreds.
Of course you have to be able to finance these projects to get them in place and this kinda limits who can create energy and get paid for it. I have ten acres in SD county, that I thought might be used to put a large photovoltaic array and sell power to SDGE (Sempra Energy), however after exploration of this idea I found that ten acres is only enough property to to provide 2/3 of the minimum amount they require to consider buying from you. For instance, 1 gw instead of 1.5 gw..... You can put up a solar array and tie it into the grid to turn your electric meter back, but getting paid hard cash for this effort only happens here if you are able to put up the proper size facility.
Additionally, you have to have the cooperation of the National, State and local agencies as well as the surrounding public opinion. (too much nimbyism in America) We have become such a fractured nation that getting consensus on ideas is often next to impossible. The physical ability to accomplish all these ideas on this pickensplan website is probably within our technological capability. Its the getting everyone in America onto the "lets explore and implement every possible source of energy creation" mode that is going to be difficult.
