Getting energy from wind is a great idea, but it doesn't go far enough. We should be using the groups being developed to see that every thing possible is being done to make energy, and being done on a local level to spread the wealth, and jobs around. Mammouth wind farms will make a difference, but not as much as using every source possible to get energy. Every small community in this country has a number of options to utilize for energy, let's empower them with incentives too.
On TV they were talking about a group in Philadelphia who want to grow biofuels in the vacant lots. This group also mentioned that we waste so much s*** literally in this country, and we need it so badly. What a good way to make gas. The methane could be captured from s*** pools in sewage waste centers and help alleviate our shortage. Taking this gas would also save the environment, and provide more clean water. This technology has been known for at least 30 years.
I ran recycling centers in the 60's and 70's and we were advocating that farmers dig large holes and put their animal dung in the holes and get the methane gas off of it. The farmers in Montana thought we were crazy, but it is fairly easy to do, and on the Today show not long ago they had a piece on a dairy that is doing just this. The dung dries out and can still be used for things like fertilizer and possibly insulation. Why not burn it instead of coal for electricity? The Today show people weren’t too keen to touch it, but my grandma used to tell me that she picked up dried dung and piled it up to heat their home so why don’t we get the gas then sell the residue to the electric companies. Pig and chicken s*** ought to work too. Some people make clocks and fancy wall hangings out of dung, covered, of course. with plastic, so there is a market for it.
Human waste also could be burned after the gas is taken. There is so much waste that makes gas. The methane could be captured from s*** pools in sewage waste treatment plants and help alleviate our shortage. Taking this gas would also save the environment, and provide more clean water. This technology has been known for at least 30 years. See New York Times article "Sewage Plant Alchemy: Foul Gases Into Energy".
The waste from making bread and from food canneries, also can be used. Even small quantities would help get some gas. We did considerable research on this in the 70's and tried to sell it to the Montana legislature. Get the state to subsidise farmers who capture gas. There were quite a few legislatures interested, but most laughed.
Landfills could be configured so that the methane gas given off from decomposition could be collected and used. Why aren’t we taking advantage of everything we can instead of depending on other countries? We are the largest waste producing country in the world. We should be getting everything we can off of all that waste.
What about waste oil from fast food places, we used to save lard and grease during WW2 and sold it to butchers for ration stamps. Then it was used to make munitions, but we could do some of the same kinds of things now to produce gas. I just can’t believe that we are complaining instead of innovating and making the gas we need ourselves.
Wonder if the Montana farmers are still laughing or have they wised up. What do you think?
