Dear Jeff,

One of the challenges facing all Americans right now is the high cost of energy. Energy is critical to our social, economic and national security. We can and we must start meeting American energy needs with American resources.

I recently joined my colleagues in introducing the American Energy Independence and Price Reduction Act. This legislation would open ANWR and require the first lease be conducted no later than 25 months from the date of enactment. It limits the footprint of development to 2000 acres and includes environmental regulations and restrictions. The money generated would be placed in a "trust fund" to fund the projects authorized under the Energy Policy Act of 2005 that have not been fully funded including:
oBiomass grants
oHydroelectric Production Incentives
oClean Coal Power
oSolar and Wind Technologies
oMethane Hydrates Research
oIncentives for Innovative Technologies.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the mean estimate of technically recoverable oil in ANWR is 10.4 billion barrels - all of which is now economically recoverable.
oThat's more than twice the proven oil reserves in all of Texas.
oThat's almost half of the total U.S. proven reserve of 21 billion barrels.
oThat represents a possible 50 percent increase in total U.S. proven reserves.
