Hypocrits in Washington? No, that couldn't be - - - or - - - what do YOU think?
A Washington bipartisan group released a major report that - - again - - calculated the ever increasing problems with increasing CO2 levels, and how PREVENTION of deforestation could balance it.
The burning of tropical forests and their conversion to cattle farms and soybean fields is responsible for about 17% of the emissions that cause global warming (ref.: any major newspaper, 10.8.09). Absolutely correct! The report suggests that this is more than the world's cars, trucks, and airplanes combined; actually not quite true, but let's accept the data for now.
REALITY is actually FAR MORE SEVERE; presently tree's and ocean's capacity, the world's CO2 sinks, to balance CO2 levels is only about 54% and decreasing. Trees are choking on present CO2 levels, and oceans are defintley dying, showing that GREAT reductions in CO2 must be initiated literally immediately.
An Oxford University study calculated that, if great reductions in CO2 production are not initiated, there is a 90% chance that we will reverse the conditions that allowed life on this planet.
But what Washington really does is the opposite! Coal strip mining - - The Washington Administration recently assured a W-VA coal lobbyist (also Congressperson) that they would not stand in the way of 24 Coal Strip Mining projects.
The first step in coal strip mining is to take a mountain ( 8 to 12 miles in diameter) and shave off the hundreds of thousands trees that are on this mountain. Then they blow the top off, and shave (with bulldozers) down to the coal. The run-offs of toxic chemicals - - arsenic, mercury, cadmium - - into nearby lakes and streams kills every living thing.
WHERE IS THE LOGIC IN THIS?
But let's go a step further, and recognize the tremendous reductions in pollution-related diseases, even premature aging, if we would prevent this coal strip mining, and instead change to pollution-free clean sources of energy, mostly PV and wind.
As I pointed out earlier, our installation of a 3 kw roof solar (PV) electricity system doesn't only make our home literally CO2-free, but it also produces enough electricity to charge a plug-in hybrid ( - we are still listening to the - mostly hot air - promises by GM regarding their VOLT - ), and, MOST IMPORTANT, it brings an 11% return on invested money.
