Dear Ms. Leggett:
Thank you for contacting me regarding H.R. 1835, the New Alternative Transportation to Give Americans Solutions Act of 2009. I appreciate hearing from you on this important, and I am pleased to tell you that I am a co-sponsor of this legislation.
As you know, H.R. 1835, or the NAT GAS Act, creates a new federal tax credit for automobile manufacturers who produce natural gas vehicles (NGVs). The bill also maximizes existing tax credits to attract real investments in infrastructure necessary to make these vehicles a marketable, viable option for American families. It places a new focus on an area with great environmental impact-light and heavy-duty trucks. In addition, the bill asks the federal government to lead by example, requiring that half of all the new vehicles purchased by the government run on natural gas. This bill has been referred to the U.S. House Science and Technology Committee, the Ways and Means Committee, and the Oversight and Government Reform Committee where it awaits consideration.
Thank you for contacting me about this important issue. I will continue to be a strong voice for you in Washington. If you would like to receive my periodic e-newsletter, visit my website at
