I’M A RETIRED EATON EMPLOYEE. I PROVIDED EATON WITH MY HYBRID TECNOLOGY 1995. THEY ARE PROVIDING SIMILAR HYBRID COMPONENTS TO THE TRUCKING INDUSTRY.
DENTON, Texas (July 7, 2009) – Peterbilt added its Model 335 medium duty hybrid electric tractor to its family of hybrid vehicles eligible for federal tax credit. The credit of up to $9,000 from the Department of Treasury’s heavy manufacturing and transportation group can be applied to the Peterbilt Model 335 hybrid class 7 tractors based on its verified fuel savings gains of up to 40 percent.
Ideally suited for applications such as beverage and regional-haul deliveries that require a trailer, the Model 335 hybrid electric tractor achieves fuel economy gains of 40 percent through Eaton’s Hybrid Electric Power System with an electric motor that assists the PACCAR PX-6 engine with supplemental torque. The system stores energy during stopping through a process called regenerative braking, and then reuses it for acceleration. Fuel use, emissions and noise are greatly reduced.
“Peterbilt’s complete lineup of hybrid electric vehicles is now certified to receive substantial credits from the federal government,” said Bill Jackson, Peterbilt General Manager and PACCAR Vice President. “Our medium duty offerings, now including the Model 335 hybrid electric tractor are eligible for tax credits and provide substantial fuel savings while covering the full range of applications including beverage, pick up and delivery, regional haul, utility and municipal applications.”
In addition to the Eaton Hybrid Electric Power System, the Model 335 hybrid electric tractor features the unique in-dash 7-inch PACCAR proprietary Hybrid System Monitor. The hybrid display provides real-time information to the driver regarding fuel economy, battery charge, and power, and allows the driver to modify driving behavior to maximize fuel efficiency through use of the system. The display also provides full diagnostic capabilities for the hybrid system including system operating status.
Peterbilt’s production hybrids include the Model 330 hybrid electric as a non-CDL option for short haul pick-up and delivery applications, and the Model 335 hybrid electric for pick-up and delivery, beverage applications and municipal and utility operations. Information on Peterbilt’s full-range of production hybrid and aerodynamic vehicles eligible for federal tax credits are listed at www.peterbilt.com/eco/index.htm. These incentives total more than $45,000 available across 5 Peterbilt hybrid models for 2010, representing more available incentive federal tax credits than any other OEM.
Additionally, Peterbilt currently has two heavy duty hybrid configurations in pilot programs, the Model 320 hybrid equipped with Eaton’s Hydraulic Launch Assist (HLA) technology for vocational and stop-and-go and refuse applications, and the on-highway Model 386 hybrid electric vehicle for long-haul applications. Peterbilt is a leader in developing advanced hybrid solutions and our customers now have a choice of premium hybrid vehicles in four key segments to serve a wide range of needs and fulfill unique market and regulatory requirements.

Mr. Cutler:
There’s a fire sale out there. Who and what are you buying? Who in California are you talking with to take advantage of tax credits? California is in a world of hurt and will do just about anything to prop up their economy. Are you talking with GM and the Obama administration to purchase their “good assets”? What model of Pontiac is best suited for your HEV components? What manufacturing plant in California is best suited for manufacturing your HEV components? Do you understand that Eaton and Ford are the only American automotive manufacturers left in America with any value? Is there an opportunity in Fremont, California for Eaton because GM left NUMI? You’re working with the Chinese - which is good - why not work with Japan. I do know that if GM, Chrysler and Ford had taken my advice 25 years ago they wouldn’t be in the position they are in now.
I remember your postings for the MOST part, especially the listing of the many varrieties of HEV's and their derivatives. Good stuff.
I VAUGELY remember the comment about the "elephant" but when I went looking for it was gone. Did you take it down? Shame, shame, shame. One should NEVER take back what one says. This is a strengthen point of public character, Say what you mean and stick by your guns. Sorta like "True love means never having to say you are sorry"
But as I remember, your elephant comment was backed against the couple from North Dakota and they were railing on me about some supposed failure of my moral character or other mis-perceived comment I made.
What I said as I remember it, was in the comparison of MY particular pointed comments to them and their ragging me about being too rambling and verbose, (I admit to being verbose) against your elephant comment. I saw NOTHING in the comment (had I read it a time or two, perhaps I would have see the satire) that was of a satirical nature but THAT is not a great and constant method for measuring satire either. My comments were NOT directed at you and I am sorry if they were taken that way.
As for "What I have done", I must confess, very little. And certainly a lot less than I could be doing. True, i have written a few things, a few idea, a few thoughts on the issue e of energy but my Hey days may be behind me. In the late '70's I was in the cat bird seat of energy efficiency. I would arrive on a sight on Monday with a three piece suit and a pair of Florshiems and be on my way on Friday. In my dust was a newly minted truck of some particular use to a business and it was now getting an honest to God DOUBLE the amount of fuel economy that it had gotten before my arrival. Also, I left behind valuable knowledge, instructions, and confidence in the mechanical force that they could reproduce what I have delivered, many times over.
And they did. In fact, Federal Express took delivery of some 4500 IVECO Z-100 delivery vans on the strength of my work. As did the Flowers bakery Company, Campbell-Taggart Co (Wonder Bread Bakery) and a host of other people in the product delivery business.
My services were given freely but my product line was expensive. None complained. To have done so would have been for them to miss out on the great opportunity of the day, to lower their fuel/operating cost and insure a reliable supply of diesel fuel for their business operations. I eliminated ALL premises of a cooling system (air cooled) i delivered a fuel system that could run for 100,000 miles and never need any extraordinary service. And the engine was good for 300,000 miles and could be rebuilt back to OEM standards IN THE TRUCK by common floor mechanics and common tools.
I trained corporate mechanics, corporate, foreman, and corporate CEO's. They ALL received the same training. they all marched to a common drummer. They ALL got what I and my company promised them they would get.
It was so desirable an endeavor that others wanted into the game. And others GOT into the game. First there was Isuzu but they had a truck as well AS an engine. Their engine did not go as far as the truck. The next in line was IH. They came up with their old gasoline block engine and made it a diesel and it became known as the 6.9. Later to be the 7.3 and now known as the PowerStroke.
Or plan was to NEVER go forth with the WWII engine that we currently had. It was too old and too heavy and too expensive. Hitler had it designed specifically to go into North Africa for combat duty. It did okay save for the fact that we could make more water cooled engines in America than he could field in the desert. We won. He lost. it's a good thing I was on OUR SIDE. To this day the engine is the darling of the industrial market. It has a reputation as being as tuff as nails.
Our plan had been to introduce into the North American market place a d brand new design for a V-8 diesel engine. One that would fit within the than current confines of a 455 Buick V-8 engine compartment. The engine was being developed in Montreal, Canada under a joint American Canadian contract. Our first big target was the now famous HUMVV of military fame. The Army had released contracts for three prototypes of a new vehicle to take to take the place of the ubiquitous WWII jeep. It was to be larger, stronger, and more versatile. We had TWO of the three proposed prototype units in existence running with the new V-8 engine. It was a sight to behold. Nothing you could do to that engine would phase it.
In the end, we maxed all of the field test in Michigan AND at Aberdeen, MD. But in the halls of the military up high and above all of the little people came the decision NOT to use our engine. Why. Because it was proposed to be built (by contract) in Canada. The military obsessed over the idea that MAYBE one of their prime vehicles could be made useless do to the loss of its manufacturing base.
Canada would not budge on the issue. hey has spent large sums of money on the project designing, testing, and building prototypes and they wanted a recoup on their investment.
We doubled back and tried to get the large motor home industry interested (we actually had one engine running in our OWN motor home for demo purposes) as well as the short run heavy duty market (dump trucks and waste haulers0 but we could never get the commitment of the first 50,000 engines needed to get the factory built to place the order.
So, the light duty delivery van morphed into the light duty pick-up truck market and IH, Cummins, and Detroit Diesel (with the 6.2/6.5 V-8 diesel) and later into the DuraMax. Deutz closed down the North American automotive operation and we all scattered to the four winds. But while we were there, we turned the heads of a few people, not the least of which was Ford Motor Company when FexEx went with IVECO for two orders of trucks totaling some 4500 units. I have body manufacturers pulling cabs off of BRAND NEW Ford Econoline cutaways and dropping a 5 cylinder air cooled Deutz into the chassis and hanging the cab back on it and shipping it to some courier service or other van intensive operation.
Yeah, I have DONE a few things in my life and if I have my way, I'll do it again. The landscape will be the same (energy independence and efficiency) and the marketing will be heavy duty. No one in the sound of my voice (amplified through all of the various modern day outlets) will be spared. No one will be immune to my offer. Fuel cost for half or less than what you are currently spending, double the life of the ICE in your car now, less maintenance, better reliability, 100% American produced and controlled fuel sourcing, readily available (that problem is my SPECIAL secret) and 80% LESS greenhouse gas emissions.
Those are the EASY promises. I have a few more that I am working on that will blow your mind.
So, why not get back on here and PARTICIPATE. You loose nothing by doing so. Every attack (by me or anyone else) need not be defended with grand rhetoric or learned prose. All that I know I learned by the time I got to the end of the 9th grade. Sure, I read a lot and i can instantly pick up the telltale sings of one not using the Queens English properly. But that is not grounds for attacking someone.
My first ob here, as it has always been elsewhere, is to educate you on what I know about the subject matter at hand. You take THAT and add it to what YOU know and pretty soon you got something. Energy is my NATURE and my PASSION (far beyond the field of my profession) I am like Henry Ford, I am eaten up with the concept of energy and its application. He built a WHOLE museum to show off his collection of the worlds power converting machinery. He loved the stuff. (and he had the money to pursue such a hobby) Me, I just enjoy being a part of the landscape in any way that I can. But this natural gas thing WILL take off. I guarantee it. And like any other "sleeper" technology of the past, it will be those with the inside knowledge to SEE the potential, that will be at the forefront.
Thank you, Richard!
Sometimes I wonder about the Pickens movement; there seems to be so little action.
Gasoline is past $ 3.oo again and nobody seems to care.
I definitely appreciate your enthusiasm!

hi richard , cecil friend here, nice to read about your family history , and your line of work and your endeavors....I am so thankful for mr pickens to have the generosity and foresight and willpower to sponsor this forum to draw together voluntarily so many people from all backgrounds but with a sharing of purpose, to provide more energy efficient , environmentally friendly, sources of energy, and to free ourselves from the high percentage imports of foreign oil....I commend you sir for your talents and your attributes....I myself was a operating engineer for various shipping cos. freighter and tankers during my career vocation..I always had great respect for the arctic and antartic...as we always say....WELCOME ABOARD....CECIL...
Richard you are a wonderful and talented human being,as your efforts for Energy Independence would certainly indicate.I respectfully invite you to my website to enjoy some of my original music and art:-www.wiserearth.org/group/leland1-.Thank you for your gift to us, of the hopeful and excited human world.Sincerely William "Leland" Luster/L.V.,Nv./1-31-09
Thanks Richard, If we can get just one fax, web based comment form, or letter to the President or Vice President there may be a possibility that he may direct the Secretary of Treasury to take action on this idea. He needs our support and he needs funding to make the 10 year goal of Energy Independence from middle east oil he set happen. Also, the Select Congressional Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming is another route besides your representatives. Please, at your discretion, if you want to pass this idea to others and encourage them to become friends on my web page do so. Thanks for your support and help.
Sincerely and with Respect

Hi Richard, Here is a way to help and give tools to all of us for getting more RE projects started. I have been pushing for the sell of US Treasury "Energy Independence Savings Bonds". Savings bonds are normally purchased in $25 increments. This gives a way for just about any American to tighten their belts just a bit by skipping a meal at McDonalds or Pizza Hut and buying a RE savings bond to support a project. I need help pushing this project, I've faxed and emailed many in Congress/Senate already. My email is ke6cvh@yahoo.com. Here is a copy of a fax sent to Nancy Pelosi yesterday:
27FEB09
Honorable Speaker of the House Congresswoman Pelosi,
I am an Electronic Technician Chief in the US Navy with 27 years service stationed overseas. I’m outlying an idea to assist and work with current plans for achieving energy independence. I urge you, as speaker of the house and the driving force to form the select committee on energy independence and global warming, consider for discussion and introduction into the house US Treasury Savings Bonds for Energy Independance.
In WWII America sold war bonds supporting the war effort. When young, my mother told me her primary school raised enough money through bonds to build a tank to support troops. I am impressed with the patriotism and purpose of our greatest generation that accomplished so much.
Selling energy bonds for RE (Renewable Energy) development would lower foreign oil imports and assist with the complex problem of funding. Bonds sold as “Energy S” could support new solar trough plants, “Energy W” to support wind farms, Energy “H” to support hydroelectric plants, Energy “T” to support RE transportation such as electric bullet train routes powered by RE, Energy "C" COOPS for small communities only needing a small quantity of turbines, and Energy “I” for needed infrastructure high voltage power lines to the RE site. Bonds will have the project name and include an artist’s perspective of the project and an American flag. President Obama had great success with the internet during his campaign. In a similar manner, using the internet, energy bonds could have a website listing current projects and an “electronic checkout” could purchase a bond $25 or higher. Simpler methods of payment such as “PAYPAL” and credit cards would be available and after an electronic purchase is complete a color print out of the bond is available with a follow up of the bond in the mail. The website would limit quantity of projects for each category until funding is complete. After a project becomes funded, a new project will be available. A tab on the site will show history and status of previous projects. Purchasers may take great pride in “collecting” and displaying bonds of various RE projects and participating at different levels of financial support. Solar trough plants in the multi-hundred MW size capacity with molten salt energy storage in California, Arizona, and West Texas can provide a major portion of electric needs. North Dakota has potential to support 1/3 of our nations electric needs in it’s class 4 wind zone areas. There are plenty of suitable proposed wind turbine farms now around the nation to significantly increase our RE if funded. Mid sized hydro-electric has not been used in America to it’s full potential. Following the example of our neighbor, Canada, it would provide a significant increase in percentage of electric production. Developing all three we could provide the majority of our electric and heating needs through renewable energy in a "New New Deal" fashion allowing natural gas for transportation as T. Boone Pickens is working for. Bullet train routes have proven a viable alternative to commercial domestic air service and when powered by electricity provided by RE suppliers America would be in the forefront of world technology. Example, I heard of discussion for a commuter train from Denver to Colorado Springs. Such a route built as a renewable energy project with charter requirement legally requiring to only purchase electricity from available renewable energy sources would be a model example. There are many train routes, city bus systems, and government vehicles that can be converted to run from alternative energy sources and fuels. Jobs created would bolster the economy, lower trade deficit, and strengthen national security. I would take great pride in print outs of bonds with graphics of each project I supported and many other Americans would also. The energy bonds could have tax breaks. BLM lands may be a viable place to start for some projects.
I contacted the US treasury department and was told that the marketing department for savings bonds closed several years ago. I was told there would be problems because savings bonds are at the federal level while the projects will be at the state and local level. I disagree and believe that these can easily be figured out in the way of grants to the state and local level using money from the bonds for those specific projects. I was told to check out auctions on the www.treasurydirect.gov website and found them to not apply to citizens wanting to buy savings bonds to support a cause such as energy independance. I was told by the treasury department to look into CREB (Clean Renewable Energy Bonds). I found CREB to be large scale funding that a citizen would not be able to participate in as a US Treasury Energy Independance Bond would provide. If given the tools to participate directly, the power of the citizens of the United States to help achieve energy independance could not be denied. Americans mean well and the Energy Independance Savings bond program will give citizens the power at their level to make it happen. If marketed through a web page, commercials, and to federal employees the word would get out and participation would spread like wildfire.

Hello i read your comment on another page and i had to check u out. I have a problem a little bit with hybrids. And electric cars. I think they r great for soccer moms just going to and fro. But we travel for work and my husband builds tanks that hold fuel, ethanol, water, we were supposed to start building methanol tanks bcuz they r a big way to make fuel it's like ethanol but since everyone thinks we r going to starve if we use all the corn. They use a different plant or something i'm not sure about the chemicals i leave that up to the scientists. but these plants created jobs we built tanks at alot of ethanol plants and the production on them has slowed down quite a bit. I don't know y. We drive a dodge ram and i'm sorry but it's a hemi. I almost got a deisel but i'm glad i didn't bcuz the fuel soared not too long after we bought this truck. but i use the 10percent ethanol and it's fine i don't have any exhaust it's cleaner and better for the engine and u don't have to sale your car and spend a fortune on these hybrids and electric cars. You can't drive one of those when u need horsepower and heavy duty. and your driving in dirty dust plants and your traveling and u need to haul your house. So i'm not real big on the electric and hybrid cuz it's not practical for me. but some are but to tell u the truth i think that hybrid brought the automobile industry down cuz no one could afford them. alot of people can't afford to buy anything let alone a 50000 dollar car that isn't even really fullproof. u see what i mean. Y can't we go with a energy efficient car that doesn't have to be compromised on the power and capability's. how about propane or natural gas or ethanol it works just fine. and no one will starve corn is fattening and the world thinks we r fat anyway so kill two birds with one stone i say. and they feed the cows what they don't use and it's really good cow feed. personally i think the cow's should be fed grass and not corn or other cow parts. anyway i just had to put my 2cents worth in.

Doing NOTHING? Maybe. But NOT for long.

Sometimes I wonder about the Pickens movement; there seems to be so little action.
Gasoline is past $ 3.oo again and nobody seems to care.
I definitely appreciate your enthusiasm!

It is a pleasure to have you in the group.
Do not let someone like DD ever intimidate a man of your quality and stature.

I was browsing variouspostngs when I came upon your page. This is very interesting material you have posted.
(laughingly) YOU STOLE MY IDEA (congratulations)
I had a simular idea back in the 70's I am certainly glad that one of us pursued the idea.
I notice we have several common freinds, May we become freinds as well?
I would also like to comment to Laurie's posting in January concerning electric cars -vs- horsepower for work vehicles.
Never kid yourselves, we wll always need "horsepower"
but the more we can aviod the use of excessive horsepower than needed it would sure be nice.
I remember my folks generation always saying, You don't need all that horesepower in that hotrod. Well they were right and now I sound like them.
The need should dictate the vehicle, unfortunately I am in the same boat as Laurie, I drive an expedition because of business.

Mr. Paul Gipe, a resident of Bakersfield CA, an author of several books about wind energy, and recipient of multiple awards as a pioneer in the industry since the 1970's has put a letter I wrote to Senator Dorgan on this subject as well as an older letter I wrote on wind COOP in JAN07.
