Hi Mike, Here is a tool for all of us to get RE projects started by selling of US Treasury "Energy Independence Savings Bonds". Savings bonds are normally purchased in $25 increments. This gives a way for just about any American to tighten their belts just a bit by skipping a meal at McDonalds or Pizza Hut and buying an RE savings bond to support a renewable energy project and save money at the same time for themselves. In a similar manner, using the internet, energy bonds could have a website listing current projects and an “electronic checkout” could purchase a bond $25 or higher. Simpler methods of payment such as “PAYPAL” and credit cards would be available and after an electronic purchase is complete a color print out of the bond is available with a follow up of the bond in the mail. The website would limit quantity of projects for each category until funding is complete. After a project becomes funded, a new project will be available. A tab on the site will show history and status of previous projects. Mid sized hydro-electric has not been used in America to it’s full potential. Well, this is my first time to leave a comment on your wall and I have to begin with an apology for it being a blog comment.
Mike, on the 10th of November a friend of mine on the PP site, Iain McKennon, left me a comment on my wall. Within his comment Iain said, "My approach to Pickens at this point in time is to think globally and act locally." Unbeknownst to me at the time that particular comment of Iain's firmly lodged in my mind and has ever since been gradually working its way into a position of being an influential element in my creativity regarding Green solutions.
Speaking of friends, an old friend of mine used to tell me that the road to attaining an affluence (in anything) was to go with what one knew not new things that were as of yet untried. While I am sure that there are exceptions to this rule, I do believe that empirically, my friend's advice can be seen to be immensely more true than not.
So, here I am at a juncture in my life where I want to play an effective role in environmental repair, in preventive envirionmental health and overall be an active participant in a Green solution. Therefore, in listening to a couple of friends, it occurred to me that I can probably have a greater and more effective impact by concentrating my creativity and production on a local/regional target than doing otherwise. I also recognize that acting along the lines of what I already have personal experience with and/or incorporating a familiar reality in what I do is a strong plus in anything I set out to accomplish. And, I know that while acting locally it is critical that I continue to be thinking globally.
HERE IS A SEED I AM PLANTING
I want to share this seed with you MIke because it just might be a seed that you or someone you know would want to plant where you are residing.
What I am going to do is form a corporation that is a Green construction company, an investment club, an online social community, a market research company, a research and development company, a documentation and educational video production company and an online course in the ways and means of how to build green. There's even more but those are all the top liners.
What will this company do (broad generalities only):
It will begin by doing infill development i.e., in Fort Smith, AR. Fort Smith is where I live and there is an abundance of vacant properties within the city limits that can be purchased whereupon new dwellings (single family, duplexes, three and four-plexes) can be built. Currently there are not any builders in this area that are interested in building on these properties. Instead the local builders have their attention on building in whatever new subdivision is being developed.
The company will target these inner city vacant properties to purchase and construct new dwellings suitable and appropriate to the neighborhoods where they are located. The dwellings will be aesthetic, have high curb appeal, in most cases be small ( 800 sq ft. - 1,500 sq ft.) as the lots are small, will be built to endure, will be practical, will enhance the neighborhood, indeed the city, and...will be constructed with viable GREEN technologies.
Each dwelling built by this company will be model of green construction and green technologies utilized in home building.
The company, in the process of building green homes, will also serve as a vehicle to introduce, educate and enlighten a broad base of investors in numerous cutting edge green technologies that have to do with the home and beyond.
The company will circumvent the need for borrowing capital by opening up investment (per project) to the general public (local, national or international).
Participation in this company will be made very simple and inclusive. For example: The range of investment accepted will go from as low as $10 to as high as, but not exceeding, 5 percent of a project's total cost. Therefore, the lowest number of investors that could ever be possible on any project would be 20. Investments will be done by project.
Every project will be audio/video documented from beginning to end. The video documentation will be made available to any investor who has invested in the project. Also, when the completed dwelling is sold the buyer will receive a copy of the entire video documentation of their new green home from planning to completion.
Of course, all investors will be able to follow the progress of each project that they have invested in online and interact with the project. There will be web cams at each job site, weekly reports will be online by the project mgr. including detailed photos and anecdotes and detailed weekly expenditures. And, any and all tech used in the building of the project will be thoroughly explained as it is incorporated. I guess you could say that this aspect of the company is like doing an in-house Better Homes and Gardens type of production. Who knows...perhaps it could even become a series for PBS.
The entire operation process of the company will be transparent.
Nothing is done unless the money to pay for it is immediately available. Nothing is bought on credit.
All personnel who are involved in anyway with a project of the company or the company itself are a member/investor of the company. The exception to this would be anyone employed by the government eg., builidng inspectors, city planners, etc.
This is not a volunteer based company. Those who deliver a product and/or service for the company will be paid for the product/service just as they are always paid for their services rendered.
All frontline and backline costs are factored into the overall cost of a project. The video production and the online access availability are atypical expenses to a construction project. However, these elements are critical to the purpose and operation of the company so they will become a typical expense included in the budget of each project carried out by this company. The company's motto: Purpose - Product - Profit (listed in relative order of importance).
At this stage in the creative process everything is subject to modification.
Okay, Mike. There's the seed I'm planting in very broad and general terms. I'm sure you will see and extrapolate all the possibilities and potential of such a company. Feel free to ask any questions that you may have or comment as you wish. I am totally willing to share any of this project and how it progresses with anyone. In my opinion, if we had myriad of these companies in active operation we could all only benefit by such a circumstance.

I have helped to construct many dwellings of many different sizes over the last 35 years but I have never constructed a house that totally utilizes green technologies. There will obviously be a learning curve to overcome and I will have to recruit those who have this expertise from numerous areas including the PP site. Access to green expertise does not seem to be all that available locally.

Over the course of the past few months I have found myself embroiled in debates that range from politics to the best type of heat exchangers. I will say now that I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer especially when compared to people such as your selves.
The Pickens Plan has provided a place for us all to come together, to voice our opinions, push our ideas, argue for a better future, and pool our collective talents.
My talents are a long story but my story is necessary to a theme, so I would ask you to listen. When I was young like many children I had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. I grew up on Florida’s Space Coast in the midst of monumental human achievement in technology and science. My parents encouraged me to take “the hard subjects” in school, calculus, physics, and chemistry. I did well in my studies, but was unfulfilled something was lacking. Eventually I would leave my studies and join the Army. I traveled the world, was exposed to many different ideas, peoples, and philosophies. After a decade plus of serving King and country I came home and decided to return to my studies. I listened to opinion of family and friends and decided on Electrical Engineering as the course I would pursue. Once again I did well, and thoroughly enjoyed my studies. Alas I found myself once again unfulfilled and left college just short of completing my senior year and obtaining my degree. I opted to enter the construction industry where I have worn many hats over the years.
Now that I have completely bored you allow me to come to the point. My life’s experiences have given me (at least in some small ways) the tools I need to understand at least at basic levels what you are putting forth on the forums in terms of technology and the mechanics there of. In my humble opinion I am one of the few that can follow (even if it takes a lot of work on my part) what it is you are proposing and why that it might be the way to go. My talent has always been in the form of leadership to make a failing system work as intended. Systems not made of technology but of people. I do not do well with all people, but I have had over thirty years of experience in leading people to do all kinds of things. But that is my talent. Your talents are something that you understand.
But here on the Pickens Plan where people of all walks of life and all experience and educational levels want to affect change and want to understand, are your arguments really having the effect that you want?
I would propose to the Scientists, Engineers, and Designers, that collectively you all get together and develop a basic guide line of terms and processes that speak at a level that everyone can understand. I am not talking about educating everyone to your level, but providing a basic set of tools that allow everyone to fully grasp those things that are the most important. Facts, figures, base loads, graphs, infrastructures that can not handle significant increase to the grids, ammonia generation, and rising sea levels are all well and good but if they do not reach the lay person what good are they? News papers write at 8th grade levels so that they reach far more people with the news than if they were written at advanced degree level.
If many of the things that the Scientists, Engineers, and Designers discuss on the forums here were broken down like “science fair projects” more people would actively embrace these things and more pressure could be brought to bear to expedite change.
I do not profess to have all the answers and I certainly do not have you all’s background or expertise, but I do know that knowledge is power. If you want broader base support more people have to understand (at least at basic levels) what you are talking about.
Here on the Pickens plan there are many teachers and public speakers and such that could help. I just jumped way out on a limb there. We should consider as part of the plan,
Forums that discuss and teach in as non technical as possible how solar power works, how the electrical grid works, where natural gas comes from, how ocean thermal power is turned into electricity, how hydrogen is produced, how fuel cells work, and such.
I am not saying that the people here are uneducated, but if you look at many profiles you will find a recurring theme, “I don’t know much about renewable energy but I am trying to learn”. Many of you have been involved in your various areas for several decades; please allow the rest of us to benefit from your experience and knowledge.

The proposition is something to think about but let me ask you to allow me to test a theory on you.
If a group of us we able to form an Official Investment Club associated to the membership of the Pickens' Plan and we raised enough money to fund your startup, how much would you need?
Don't answer that online, it makes your prerequisite nondisclosure request for ID before receipt of a prospectus useless. Besides that point, the idea I am trying to convey is that to really get serious money invested in the idea, it needs to be vetted in a manner that can't be questioned, but to get that kind of money . . . to build a prototype and test it in a manner that proves up it superior value, takes more than most have sitting around in a shoe box.
The temptation is to go drectly to the public, but that is part and parcel of what has been happening to us as a People. Very good companies run by great people are producing superior products and delivering super service but they never get out of the fishbowl of their local or regional markets.
Well never, is too strong a term, but in todays thinking, five or ten years give the foreign manufactures too much time to slam the door on your national or global aspirations. What I am talking about is creating a practical and repeatable formula for giving American ingenuity a fighting chance.
I am talking about and at you and what you propose. I need you feedback to tweak the concept so that it isn't just a good idea. This Investment Club wouldn't be designed to run your business or tell you how to make the propeller spin more efficiently. It would be designed to coordinate the inginuity of entrepreneurial wind turbine manufacturers in a financial sense. See the attched and search Pickens' Plan on the keyword: Elephant.

Hi Mike. My company's intent is to commercialize its next generation wind turbines - starting at $1,000/KW, $.05/kWh, US territory. Mass Production will reduce to $500/KW. Thats all its worth! Its not the technology, its the push back and fear of becoming legacy. I have a technology suite, some of which has gone through 3D virtual simulation, POC, exact mathematical designs. Electrons have no brand, and it is zero sum, money and profits for next quarter.Installation time is fractional. I want to present to TB Pickens where the technology is, what can be done - with US technology, within our industrial base. But, access to him/ lieutenants seems more difficult than solving the crises.,

Therefore, the lowest number of investors that could ever be possible on any project would be 20. Investments will be done by project.
Every project will be audio/video documented from beginning to end. The video documentation will be made available to any investor who has invested in the project. Also, when the completed dwelling is sold the buyer will receive a copy of the entire video documentation of their new green home from planning to completion.
Of course, all investors will be able to follow the progress of each project that they have invested in online and interact with the project. There will be web cams at each job site, weekly reports will be online by the project mgr. including detailed photos and anecdotes and detailed weekly expenditures. And, any and all tech used in the building of the project will be thoroughly explained as it is incorporated. I guess you could say that this aspect of the company is like doing an in-house Better Homes and Gardens type of production. Who knows...perhaps it could even become a series for PBS.
The entire operation process of the company will be transparent.
Nothing is done unless the money to pay for it is immediately available. Nothing is bought on credit.
All personnel who are involved in anyway with a project of the company or the company itself are a member/investor of the company. The exception to this would be anyone employed by the government eg., builidng inspectors, city planners, etc.
This is not a volunteer based company. Those who deliver a product and/or service for the company will be paid for the product/service just as they are always paid for their services rendered.
All frontline and backline costs are factored into the overall cost of a project. The video production and the online access availability are atypical expenses to a construction project. However, these elements are critical to the purpose and operation of the company so they will become a typical expense included in the budget of each project carried out by this company. The company's motto: Purpose - Product - Profit (listed in relative order of importance).
At this stage in the creative process everything is subject to modification.
Okay, Mike. There's the seed I'm planting in very broad and general terms. I'm sure you will see and extrapolate all the possibilities and potential of such a company. Feel free to ask any questions that you may have or comment as you wish. I am totally willing to share any of this project and how it progresses with anyone. In my opinion, if we had myriad of these companies in active operation we could all only benefit by such a circumstance.

I have helped to construct many dwellings of many different sizes over the last 35 years but I have never constructed a house that totally utilizes green technologies. There will obviously be a learning curve to overcome and I will have to recruit those who have this expertise from numerous areas including the PP site. Access to green expertise does not seem to be all that available locally.

Over the course of the past few months I have found myself embroiled in debates that range from politics to the best type of heat exchangers. I will say now that I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer especially when compared to people such as your selves.
The Pickens Plan has provided a place for us all to come together, to voice our opinions, push our ideas, argue for a better future, and pool our collective talents.
My talents are a long story but my story is necessary to a theme, so I would ask you to listen. When I was young like many children I had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. I grew up on Florida’s Space Coast in the midst of monumental human achievement in technology and science. My parents encouraged me to take “the hard subjects” in school, calculus, physics, and chemistry. I did well in my studies, but was unfulfilled something was lacking. Eventually I would leave my studies and join the Army. I traveled the world, was exposed to many different ideas, peoples, and philosophies. After a decade plus of serving King and country I came home and decided to return to my studies. I listened to opinion of family and friends and decided on Electrical Engineering as the course I would pursue. Once again I did well, and thoroughly enjoyed my studies. Alas I found myself once again unfulfilled and left college just short of completing my senior year and obtaining my degree. I opted to enter the construction industry where I have worn many hats over the years.
Now that I have completely bored you allow me to come to the point. My life’s experiences have given me (at least in some small ways) the tools I need to understand at least at basic levels what you are putting forth on the forums in terms of technology and the mechanics there of. In my humble opinion I am one of the few that can follow (even if it takes a lot of work on my part) what it is you are proposing and why that it might be the way to go. My talent has always been in the form of leadership to make a failing system work as intended. Systems not made of technology but of people. I do not do well with all people, but I have had over thirty years of experience in leading people to do all kinds of things. But that is my talent. Your talents are something that you understand.
But here on the Pickens Plan where people of all walks of life and all experience and educational levels want to affect change and want to understand, are your arguments really having the effect that you want?
I would propose to the Scientists, Engineers, and Designers, that collectively you all get together and develop a basic guide line of terms and processes that speak at a level that everyone can understand. I am not talking about educating everyone to your level, but providing a basic set of tools that allow everyone to fully grasp those things that are the most important. Facts, figures, base loads, graphs, infrastructures that can not handle significant increase to the grids, ammonia generation, and rising sea levels are all well and good but if they do not reach the lay person what good are they? News papers write at 8th grade levels so that they reach far more people with the news than if they were written at advanced degree level.
If many of the things that the Scientists, Engineers, and Designers discuss on the forums here were broken down like “science fair projects” more people would actively embrace these things and more pressure could be brought to bear to expedite change.
I do not profess to have all the answers and I certainly do not have you all’s background or expertise, but I do know that knowledge is power. If you want broader base support more people have to understand (at least at basic levels) what you are talking about.
Here on the Pickens plan there are many teachers and public speakers and such that could help. I just jumped way out on a limb there. We should consider as part of the plan,
Forums that discuss and teach in as non technical as possible how solar power works, how the electrical grid works, where natural gas comes from, how ocean thermal power is turned into electricity, how hydrogen is produced, how fuel cells work, and such.
I am not saying that the people here are uneducated, but if you look at many profiles you will find a recurring theme, “I don’t know much about renewable energy but I am trying to learn”. Many of you have been involved in your various areas for several decades; please allow the rest of us to benefit from your experience and knowledge.

The proposition is something to think about but let me ask you to allow me to test a theory on you.
If a group of us we able to form an Official Investment Club associated to the membership of the Pickens' Plan and we raised enough money to fund your startup, how much would you need?
Don't answer that online, it makes your prerequisite nondisclosure request for ID before receipt of a prospectus useless. Besides that point, the idea I am trying to convey is that to really get serious money invested in the idea, it needs to be vetted in a manner that can't be questioned, but to get that kind of money . . . to build a prototype and test it in a manner that proves up it superior value, takes more than most have sitting around in a shoe box.
The temptation is to go drectly to the public, but that is part and parcel of what has been happening to us as a People. Very good companies run by great people are producing superior products and delivering super service but they never get out of the fishbowl of their local or regional markets.
Well never, is too strong a term, but in todays thinking, five or ten years give the foreign manufactures too much time to slam the door on your national or global aspirations. What I am talking about is creating a practical and repeatable formula for giving American ingenuity a fighting chance.
I am talking about and at you and what you propose. I need you feedback to tweak the concept so that it isn't just a good idea. This Investment Club wouldn't be designed to run your business or tell you how to make the propeller spin more efficiently. It would be designed to coordinate the inginuity of entrepreneurial wind turbine manufacturers in a financial sense. See the attched and search Pickens' Plan on the keyword: Elephant.
