WASHINGTON D.C. - U.S. Congressman Dan Boren released the following statement today in regard to the announcement by the Potential Gas Committee (PGC) and the Colorado School of Mines on the abundance of domestic natural gas resources. Boren was joined earlier this spring by Democratic Caucus Chairman John Larson (CT-01), Congressman John Sullivan (OK-1), and several others in announcing the introduction of H.R. 1835 the New Alternative Transportation to Give Americans Solutions Act, or NAT GAS Act. The legislation, which would significantly expand the use of natural gas as an alternative to conventional transportation fuel, could quickly reduce the nation’s dependence on foreign energy while simultaneously reducing transportation fuel costs, greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles, and urban pollution where dense vehicular fleets are prevalent. Since its introduction the NAT GAS Act has garnered the support of a bipartisan group of 66 co-sponsors in U.S. House of Representatives.
Congressman Boren: “Industry leaders, including Aubrey McClendon, T. Boone Pickens, and many others, have been highlighting for some time now the abundance of domestic gas reserves that we should be developing as a bridge fuel for powering our nation’s energy future. Natural gas is a cleaner, cheaper alternative to traditional transportation fuel and we must harness it as soon as possible to rid ourselves of an overwhelming and harmful reliance of foreign energy sources. The report released today is yet another example of the growing case for increased use of natural gas and for legislation like my NAT GAS Act, H.R. 1835. Democratic Caucus Chairman John Larson, Congressman John Sullivan, and I believe the NAT GAS Act can be a defining moment in the history of our nation’s energy policy – and this report helps illustrate that point.”
Fantastic news! Apparently not every politician in Washington, DC is asleep at the wheel. Dan Boren (D-OK) introduced H.R. 1835, The New Alternative Transportation to Give Americans Solutions Act (or “NAT GAS” Act), to the 111th Congress on April 1, 2009. This bill contains robust support for natural gas transportation initiatives. Key components are:
Title I: Promote the purchase and use of NGVs with an Emphasis on Heavy Duty Vehicles and Fleet Vehicles
Title II: Promote Production of NGVs by Original Equipment Manufacturers
Title III. To Incentivize the Installation of Natural Gas Fuel Pumps and Service Stations and Depots and Domestic LNG Production Facilities for Small Energy Producers
Title IV: Natural Gas Vehicles (Not later than 2014, at least 50% of all new vehicles purchased by the US Government shall be capable of operating on natural gas.)
The bill contains tax credits for manufacturers and buyers of NGVs as well as for businesses that build natural gas refueling infrastructure.
The full text of the bill can be viewed here.
Introduction of a bill is the first step in the legislative process. Bills and resolutions first go to committees that deliberate, investigate, and revise them before they go on to general debate. The majority of bills never make it out of committee. This bill was referred to three committees:
House Ways and Means
House Science and Technology Committee
House Oversight and Governmental Reform
The members of each of these committees can be found in the links above.
This type of legislation promoting natural gas transportation is exactly what the United States needs right now. If you believe as I do the biggest threat to the American economy and American democracy is peak oil combined with America’s foreign oil addiction, please contact the members of these committees and voice your support for this bill! At a minimum, please contact those members from your home state.
Passage of this bill would have numerous benefits for all Americans. This bill would:
Reduce foreign oil imports and keep our energy dollars at home
Revitalize America’s natural gas and energy industries
Revitalize America’s automobile industry
Create millions of new jobs
Increase energy royalty payments to tens of thousands of American farmers and landowners.
Drastically reduce CO2 and gasoline particulate emissions.
Reinvigorate moribund American equity markets.
Create an American energy foundation for a future of extended prosperity, capitalism, self determination, democracy and freedom.
I want to list the cosponsors of this bill:
Rep. Michael Burgess [R-TX]
Rep. Michael Thompson [D-CA]
Rep. Jeff Miller [R-FL]
Rep. John Larson [D-CT]
Rep. Sanford Bishop [D-GA]
Rep. Harry Teague [D-NM]
Rep. Michael Conaway [R-TX]
Rep. Steve Kagen [D-WI]
Rep. Neil Abercrombie [D-HI]
Rep. John Sullivan [R-OK]
Rep. Betsy Markey [D-CO]
Rep. Michael McMahon [D-NY]
Rep. Walter Minnick [D-ID]
These fine folks should be congratulated! You all should contact your local representatives and ask them why they were not a cosponsor of this bill.
The investment angle on such legislation is obvious: producers of US natural gas like Chesapeake Energy (CHK), ConocoPhillips (COP), and British Petroleum (BP) would be strong beneficiaries of these policies. Manufacturers of natural gas compressors like General Electric (GE) and Ingersoll Rand (IR) would see large increases in orders. Honda Motor Company (HMC), maker of the Honda Civic GX NGV and shareholder in Fuelmaker (the manufacturer of the “Phill”), would also benefit. And don’t forget Clean Energy Fuels (CLNE). Passage of this bill might even prompt consideration for an investment in the natural gas ETF UNG
I recieved a letter from Sen. Brownback today in responce to my e-mail asking him if he supported the Renewable Electricity Standards Act. He talked the importance of producing more domestic energy from all sorces including renewables. I was disapointed though, he did not mention the bill, even though I asked for a specific answer about his support of the bill. I am going to write back and thank him for his letter and tell him I'm glad to hear that he supports renewables, and lessening our dependance oin foreign oil. I still would like to ask for his support for the bill.
The Renewable Elecricity Standards bill is H.R, 890. You can find it at house.gov. Enter the name or number in the THOMAS search engine on the home page. It is sponsored by Rep. Ed. Markey.
I just sent an e-mail to Senator Brownbeck. I told him I would like to know if he supports the RES bill. I told him that I considered it a matter of national security. If we use wind and solar to produce electricity, we could use the natural gas it replaces the fuel over the road trucks and fleets. I have heard that China is buying oil futures and O.P.E.C. is cutting production to drive up the price of oil. If we had started using renewables in the 70's after the oil embargo we would already have the infrastructure in place. Every year that we wait is another $700 billion we can't use here at home. God knows we can use the money.
Monday, Boone held a groundbreaking Energy Summit in Washington, DC. President Clinton, Vice President Gore, Senator Reid, Speaker Pelosi, Energy Secretary Chu and leaders from the private sector all gathered together to talk about jumpstarting our economy by ending our dependence on foreign oil.
If you haven’t had a chance to watch the summit, you can view it in its entirety, by clicking here.
This morning, we had a meeting and Boone wanted me to tell you that he wants to hear from YOU!
Watch the energy summit, then record your thoughts on the impact of the summit and upload your video to YouTube. Send me link and your submission will have the chance to be featured on Boone’s Daily Pickens blog, and seen by thousands of people! Let’s hear what YOU have to say.
Please keep video submissions under 2:00 and don’t forget to give folks a sneak preview of the landmark Virtual March on Washington, coming up April 1-3.
So let’s hit the district pages, spread the word, and fire up those video cameras. The Pickens Plan isn’t just about Boone, it’s about all of us working together to forge a safer, cleaner, more prosperous energy future. Boone wants to hear from you!
I'll see what we can come up with. I have a 4 hour drive starting in 5 min. So I'll think while driving. Feel free to holler back but there will be a delay on my end getting back to you
I live in the north east corner of Morris county. I asked the county treasurer and she said I was in the first district for federal. I'm not sure for state. I'm 10 mi. North of Council Grove.

No suport for stimulus package as written from Kansas reps. . There will be some jocking in Senate to make it more palitable to the Republicans. If you believe in stimulus package or not if it passes we need to have it give us the most energy independance per dollar spent. OR loose the least money per dollar spent depending on your perspective. Delete Comment
